Visceral Manipulation: Restoring Balance from Within
Visceral Manipulation is a gentle, precise manual therapy that focuses on assessing and improving the mobility and motion of the body’s internal organs—such as the liver, stomach, intestines, kidneys, and bladder—and their connective tissues. Developed by French osteopath and physical therapist Jean-Pierre Barral, this approach is based on the understanding that optimal health depends on the harmonious movement and relationship between all structures in the body.
Each organ in the body has a natural rhythm and motion. When these subtle movements are restricted—due to surgery, infection, inflammation, trauma, or postural imbalances—they can create tension patterns that affect not only the organ itself but also surrounding muscles, joints, and the nervous system. Over time, these restrictions can contribute to pain, reduced function, and overall imbalance.
Through gentle, targeted touch, the practitioner identifies areas of restricted motion and helps the body restore natural mobility and alignment. This facilitates improved circulation, lymphatic flow, and communication between organ systems, supporting the body’s innate ability to heal and self-regulate.
Visceral Manipulation can complement other osteopathic and manual therapies, and it may be particularly helpful for individuals experiencing digestive issues, postural imbalances, chronic pain, musculoskeletal tension, or the lingering effects of surgery or trauma.
